Headteacher Welcome

Longcot and Fernham CE Primary is a school where individuals are valued and helped to achieve their personal best.  Children are supported in becoming confident and independent young people, who thrive on challenge, and are motivated to learn.  All schools have their own distinctive ‘feel’ which makes each one unique. We believe that the ‘special feel’ at Longcot and Fernham CE Primary comes from our caring, supportive and safe, friendly environment.

I am extremely proud to lead a team that is extremely dedicated and fully committed to children's well-being, achieving high standards and providing the very best opportunities for all in our care.  Staff, supported by governors, work hard to deliver a rich and challenging curriculum; to prepare children for future education; and to help them acquire the skills and enthusiasm needed to embrace the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.

Choosing the right primary school for your child can be one of the hardest decisions you have to make.  Of course many schools aspire to achieve at the highest level and we are no different.  So what is it that sets us apart?

We are a primary school which has very high expectation for all the pupils in our care and are extremely proud that our children achieve well in learning. However our belief and success are founded on a far wider variety of aims for our children at Longcot and Fernham.

The excellent start begins in the Reception class and continues through the school with staff providing a happy, supportive and purposeful environment, and a curriculum that excites and stimulates children’s imaginations and creative thinking. Frequent trips and visits, and a wide range of after-school clubs further add to the opportunities available to children.

We strive to do the best we can for our children in the way that is best for them.  We have a concerted emphasis on developing thinking skills, developing resilience and a growth mind-set, teaching children how to live harmoniously and most of all enjoying their learning and having fun.  Consequently children are more confident, resourceful and ready to learn; taking responsibility for their future lives and the many important decisions they will make.

Relationships and attitudes are very positive and an ethos exists in which learning together becomes an enjoyable and fulfilling experience for all.

Christian values underpin all that we do at Longcot and Fernham CE Primary School.  We believe that the understanding and application of Christian values strengthens the school community’s spiritual development which is demonstrated by our thoughts and actions. Our core Christian values are: Love, Honesty and Respect.  As a school we have chosen these to enhance the curriculum and daily school life. Each term we focus on a different Christian value, explicitly through our collective worship time. Children have the opportunity to reflect on each value and to develop an understanding of that value in action and how they behave.

We place a large emphasis on children’s views and opinions and believe in empowering children to make decisions about their school and learning. We are also proud to be a Church School reflecting Christian values in the way we interact and build partnerships with each other and within our community; children also learn about other faiths and religions. Mutual respect forms the basis for all our learning and the partnerships we have with parents/carers and the community enables us to achieve the high standards which are hallmarks of Longcot and Fernham School.

As a school we are constantly seeking ways to improve and grow.   We value and appreciate the support we receive, enabling us to offer the children activities which extend and enrich their learning during and beyond the normal timetabled day. We have a variety of clubs including gardening, computing, construction, puzzle, choir, and a wide range of extra-curricular sporting activities including football, hockey, running, rounders, netball and cricket.  An extensive programme of instrumental lessons is also on offer to pupils and additional provision is made for those with particular interest and ability in music.

Our staff, coupled with supportive parents and governors, contributes greatly to the success of our school. We all work together with a common purpose – to ensure that our children are happy and successful in their primary years. Please come and see us and find out for yourself.  We are always delighted to welcome visitors, and would be glad to give you a tour of the school and answer any further questions you may have.

Kind Regards,

Claire Mellor
