Design and Technology

Design and Technology at Longcot and Fernham primary school

"Design and technology should be the subject where mathematical brainboxes and science whizzkids turn their bright ideas into useful products" - James Dyson.

In our school, the teaching of design technology demands that pupils are curious and brave in order to achieve success. Pupils are encouraged to become independent, creative problem-solvers and thinkers as individuals and as part of a team. Design and technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ thoughts and values. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art.

Pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens, for example, understanding and applying the principles of nutrition or how to cook a recipe. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. At the same time, children will be involved in a learning culture, introducing different designers or architects through the years.
