British Values

Fundamental British Values and No Outsiders

At Longcot and Fernham CE Primary School, in line with The Department for Education, we aim to actively promote British Values at school to ensure the children leave school prepared for life in modern Britain. We aim to make British Values relevant to the daily life of children, so we try to make links between the British Values, our school vision and values, and aspects of our curriculum. In particular, we use the No Outsiders content in our personal development offer to connect to and make explicit British Values Education.

You can see more on No Outsiders by following the link in red below -

No Outsiders

All Different, All Welcome!

Democracy

Children are taught what democracy is and that every individual has the right to have their opinions listened to respectfully. Through PSHE sessions using Jigsaw PSHE and No Outsiders, children are taught to discuss issues in a measured, open-minded and calm way.

The Rule of Law

At Longcot and Fernham School children are the taught the value of rules and the reason behind the laws and rules that are designed to govern and protect us.

Our Positive Relationships Approach enable all members of the school community (pupils, staff, governors, parents and visitors) to work together to create a supportive and successful school.

Individual Liberty

At Longcot and Fernham School children are encouraged to make good choices supported in a safe and supportive environment.

Children are taught the importance of responsibility; they are expected to take responsibility for their actions and to understand the consequences their actions may have on themselves or on other people.

The understanding of an individual’s rights and responsibilities are promoted in PSHE sessions, online safety sessions and in Collective Worship.

Mutual Respect

As well as being a fundamental British Value, Respect is one of our three core values (Love, Honesty and Respect) which we use as a basis for everything at Longcot and Fernham School. Children learn that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights and those of others. All members of the school community (pupils, staff, governors, parents and visitors) are expected to treat each other with respect.

Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

Children are taught to regard people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and tolerance.

Through RE, assemblies and PHSE children learn about a range of faiths, religions and cultures. The school delivers the RE curriculum in accordance with the requirements of SACRE (Standing Advisory Council for Religious Education).which reflects that 'the  religious traditions in Great Britain are in the main Christian, while taking account of the teaching and practices of the other principal religions represented in Great Britain.’ Other cultures are celebrated through topics, books and special events throughout the year.
